Does Every Lesson Have to Involve Pain?
Does Every Lesson Have to Involve Pain?
I was speaking with a client in session, and we were discussing the lessons we receive in the midst of the storm. The client shared that they wished our biggest life lessons didn't always have to come in our darkest moments. I replied, "What happens if they don't?"
I believe we receive lessons and signals toward our purpose in the next steps of our day-to-day life, but we're so busy and so distracted that we fail to see them. It's only when we're beaten down, desperate, and out of other options that we finally slow down enough to hear the lessons that were there all along.
So how do we start identifying the lessons day to day, so we don't have to find ourselves in despair first? I'll break it down into three easy steps. This doesn't mean we won't have dark times or storms, we will. But it does mean we can take full advantage of all our life lessons, not just the ones that show up in the storm.
Step 1: Take Care of You
We get so caught up in doing and being productive that we forget to make sure our own cup is full. It's simple, but as humans, we have a surprisingly hard time doing the basics. Get enough sleep. Drink your water. Eat nutritious food. Leave downtime where nothing is planned, real rest. How can we expect to hear our intuition if we're ignoring our most basic bodily needs?
Step 2: Leave Space for Joy
I don't care if you have to schedule it, you need time for things you truly enjoy, things you do just because. Think pleasure over productivity.
This is often the step we skip first, because joy can feel indulgent when there's a to-do list waiting. But joy isn't a reward we earn after the lessons — it's often the doorway to them. When we're relaxed and delighted, our nervous system isn't in problem-solving or self-protection mode, and that's exactly when intuition has the room to speak. A sunset watched in a hurry teaches you nothing. A sunset watched slowly, for no reason at all, can teach you something about what you actually value, what you've been neglecting, or what you're ready to let go of. So let yourself lay out and look at the stars. Catch the sunset without checking your phone. Let a song stop you in your tracks and just listen. These moments aren't a break from the lessons, they're often where the lessons live.
Step 3: Leave Time for Reflection
You can do this in a few different ways, prayer and meditation, journaling, or a long walk without music or a podcast in your ears. Reflect on your day. Ask yourself: were there lessons hidden in the day-to-day? I recommend doing this at least once a week.
Maybe the storm was never the only teacher. Maybe it was just the loudest one, the one we couldn't ignore. The quieter lessons have been waiting in the ordinary moments all along: the Tuesday afternoon, the long walk, the sunset you almost scrolled past.
What might you notice this week, if you let yourself slow down before life makes you?
